How was the atmosphere of the sticker culture in Canada?
Sticker culture
is very much alive in Canada. Visitors will find stickers in every city and
small town. Many of us trade and connect over the internet. Vancouver, Toronto
and Montreal communities organize international sticker events, and several
Canadian sticker artists are affiliated with international sticker crews who
post each others work.
Are you
planning to receive any feedback from the visitors after see the exhibition
later?
The best
feedback from previous events is seeing new works and new artists on the
streets. Many of the artists maintain contact after meeting at our events. We
have no formal feedback system, so that is something to consider in the next
show. Of course we get a lot of comments on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook,
but we have no central collection of information.
How about
your personal opinion about the exhibition?
This will be our
4th international adhesive art exhibit in the past 5 years. I find that
incredible. So many artists have contributed and several came in from other
cities for the previous shows to help prepare the exhibitions. Sticker art is
frequently overlooked or ignored by art critics, even those who cover graffiti
and urban art. We have found our shows satisfy a need, a desire for like-minded
souls to create and celebrate our art. We share stories and techniques, and
revel in a public explosion what is usually a subtle, discreet, and lonely activity.
Can you share
for a lil bit about what's the idea behind the exhibition?
The name 'Crusty
Creatures' reveals our preference for character art (faces, monsters,
portraits, etc.) that is more accessible to the public, but we celebrate all
adhesive art, including name tags. The joy of sticker art is that anyone can do
it, no matter how old, how wealthy, or how crusty. All it takes is ink, paper
and glue, and a sense of shared ownership of our public spaces, a feeling that
everyone, not just wealthy businesses, have the right to get our messages out
for all to see, whether on our bicycles, skateboards, cars or street furniture.
At our exhibition we will show people different ways to produce stickers, and
encourage strangers to collaborate and display designs using varied techniques.
This year we are also including an all-ages session to address the huge
interest for sticker art among teenagers.
Thanks for your
interest! Crusty Creatures 2 will be held at La Revolucion, 2848 Dundas Street
West, Toronto, on August 13, 2016. Submissions are welcome by August 1 to
Andres Musta, 266 Aldred Drive, Port Perry, ON, L9L 1B6, Canada.
