Stick It With Greatt Whyte

Salam tempel. Museum stiker Easy Tiger pada kali ini terbang langsung ke Inggris untuk mewawancarai seorang seniman bernama Greatt Whyte. Tentunya kami bercanda perihal terbang tadi. Namun, beruntung bagi macan semua, kita tak perlu jauh-jauh kesana, dengan surat elektronik, Greatt Whyte bersedia membagi cerita dibalik gambar tempelnya kepada kita semua. Langsung saja!

Hello my name is Greatt Whyte

What's the story behind your street art name?

The story behind my artist name is not the most creative to be honest. My surname is Whyte (pronounced White) since childhood I've always been fascinated by the sea and it's inhabitants my favorite animal of all time is the Great White shark, so it seemed only natural to coin the name Greatt Whyte (the double T in Greatt is a take on the original spelling of my Gaelic ancestors name Uwhiett).

How is the sticker scene in your city or country?

The sticker scene in the UK is very diverse and exciting, there is many amazing street artists & 'slap masters' here. My home city of Manchester (MCR) is the 'Capital of the north' and is an eclectic and edgy city with a reputation for setting standards and pioneering trends, the sticker scene here is fresh and addictive! every style of sticker art can be found on our street furniture from silk screen, Hand tagged, Vinyl, wheat paste and digital.

How you make your artworks, using what kind of technique?

The technique I'm favoring overall at the minute is Digitally created artworks, printed on Laserjet & Inkjet printers onto vinyl or paper. I've arrived at this way of creating stickers through years of creating stickers by hand, tagging them with letter styles and characters onto egg shell stickers (The Hello my name is types) i found this to be laborious and in some instances incredibly repetitive. The technique I'm using now allows me to create many different, fun, colorful and cost effective sticker art!(I'm currently working on a new style of semi rigid UV resistant 'Photographic Digital Prints' with a super strong adhesive to the rear, but for now that's top secret!

How did you play with your stickers on the streets, did you quite often make a collaboration?

My output for my art is the same as every other street artist or tagger, GET YOUR ART WHEREVER YOU CAN!!.I have never collaborated with other artists on my stickers (I have created many custom stickers for other artists and friends), though that's not to say that the future will not see collaborations, that being said it's only a matter of time before a concept takes place, especially as there is so many other amazing artists out there.

 

What's the most important, quantity or quality?

Quality over quantity every time.  I'd rather trade 1 amazing sticker over a 1000 poor quality any day.

Can you share us your opinion about sticker art?

My opinion on sticker art has stayed the same from the first moment I was introduced to it 8 years ago, it's a very important secret, in-plain sight culture, most people on a day to day basis do not even see the sticker art on the lamppost or on the shop door let alone take the time to properly look or read at what is a free art show right in front of them, but.....for those who do see, who seek out the sticker art on their travels or put their own art out there the rewards are exciting and limitless.

Sticker art is a fantastic medium of political, cultural or artistic advertisement that in my short years (definitely in my city) has grown from a quick way to get up your tag or experiment a typeface to an elaborate and sometimes outlandishly crazy art exhibition taking on every form, color and shape in what is an infinite show of artistic skill and expression.
